Bill Stillman, 68, passed away peacefully Thanksgiving morning, Nov. 23, 2006, in Santa Barbara. He had been a resident of Carpinteria, CA, for 36 years.
Bill was the son of Margaretta and Edwin H. Stillman, and grew up in East Chicago and Chesterton, Indiana. He came to California after graduating from Indiana University and service in Germany in the Army. He met his wife of 41 years, Mary, at UC Berkeley.
Bill enjoyed several careers, including teaching at UCSB, serving as director of Halecroft, substitute teaching in the Carpinteria schools, and owner and instructor of Kumon Math and Reading Centers in Carpinteria and Santa Barbara. He was a natural-born educator, and loved to tell stories of his experiences with his students. He was always proud of their successes.
For many years Bill has been First Reader in his church, the First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Carpinteria, where he has been very active for 34 years.
Bill enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family. He leaves behind his wife, Mary, and four children: son John (wife Shawna) of Tehachapi, Tieck (wife Bernadette) of Ojai, and Rob (wife Judy)of Houston, and daughter Jackie of Bakersfield, an "adopted son" Charles Hyde (wife Karen) of Rancho Cucamonga, and his brother Ed Stillman (wife Monica) of Kouts, Indiana.. His grandchildren were the delight of his life. He leaves grandchildren Maggie, Christopher and Mary of Ojai, Rachel and John of Tehachapi, Megan of Bakersfield, and Brenson and Camden of Rancho Cucamonga.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, Nov. 28, at 3:00 at El Montecito Presbyterian Church on East Valley Road in Montecito.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ronald McDonald House in his memory.
