DeHAAN, Beth Ellen (nee Sine)
March 10, 2013 12:28 AM
Was diagnosed at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital with Pancreatic Cancer on November 7, 2012 and entered Valle Verde Health Center for continued care on November 8. On November 30, she returned to her home in Goleta, CA for "Hospice at Home" to be cared for by her beloved husband together with the extraordinary assistance of the Visiting Nurse and Hospice Care Organization. Then on January 24, 2013, she entered Serenity House to spend her last 11 days with her loving family - husband Bill, sons Jeff and Greg, and daughter Rebecca. On Sunday, February 3, Beth serenely passed away with her beloved family at her side. In accordance with her wishes, Beth was cremated with her ashes to be held to be co-mingled with Bill's for an eventual return to Sparta, NJ.
Beth was born November 26, 1937 in Rome, NY to the late Edwin Randolph and Katherine Kosegarten Sine. She was brought up in Rome and Bayside, NY, and Morris Plains, NJ. Beth and Bill met for the first time on August 23, 1953 in Sparta, NJ where both of their families were building homes, and began what turned out to be an almost 60 year relationship. Beth graduated from Newton High School, Newton, NJ in June 1956, attended what was then Paterson State Teachers College, and subsequently married Bill in Raleigh, North Carolina on September 3, 1957. After being told for years that she probably couldn't have children because of a childhood infection that almost killed her, Beth and Bill began their family with the birth of their first son, Jeffrey William on September 7, 1958. Their second son, Gregory Robert was born on May 19, 1961, and daughter Rebecca Michelle was born on June 27, 1969. Beth was a person who truly enjoyed being a wife, mother, and homemaker. From having fun attending live theater performances and travelling with Bill during his many business trips, to the joy of raising their children, to knitting winter sweaters and afghans for each family member. Beth was also so proud of seeing her children grow into mature, loving, and responsible adults. When she was in "Hospice at Home", Beth and Bill had the opportunity to reminisce about their time together, and she remarked, "If I had the chance to live my life over, I'd do it the same way, except for the Pancreatic Cancer of course. All in all we've had a fun time and I'm so happy!"
Beth is survived by her husband of 55 years, Bill, sons Jeffrey William of Phoenixville, PA, Gregory Robert of Cupertino, CA, daughter Rebecca Michelle of Goleta, CA, their spouses, 9 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Beth also is survived by her sister Carol Ann of Orange, PA and brother David Rush and his spouse of Port St. Lucie, FL.
Services for Beth were private at her request. Donations can be sent to The Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care Foundation, 509 E Montecito St, Suite 200, Santa Barbara, CA 93109-3293.
