September 1, 2013 12:16 AM
Surrounded by her family, Nancy Ruth Braunger unexpectedly passed away on Tuesday, August 13, 2013, in Santa Barbara, CA, at 69 years old. She was born on September 29, 1943 in Stoneham, MA, and moved to California in 1957, graduating from Beverly Hills High School in 1963. In January 1965, she met Tom Braunger, at the 50/50 Club, a social venue for young, single Catholics, where she was affectionately known as 'The Spark Plug', and on June 26, 1965, they married at Blessed Sacrament Church in Hollywood, CA, before moving to Santa Barbara, CA in 1976.
Nancy had a loud and fun-loving personality, but her greatest pleasure was being a mother. A devout Catholic, she attended both St. Raphael's and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel parishes. She also amassed an impressive archive of old, classic movies and TV shows. A ball of pure energy, she worked part-time in Activities at Buena Vista Care Center in Goleta, CA, and loved showing her old movies for the residents. She never met a glass of root beer ("Bring me another beer!"), steak, burger, or Red Vine she didn't like, and she was always giving of her time, talents, and resources. Nancy touched many lives and will be deeply missed.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Corinne Reid, step-father, Robert Reid, and father, Henry Burbine. She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Tom, 4 children: Penny Dodge (Lawrence), Becky Mines (Patrick), Christopher Braunger (Brooke), and Heidi Braunger, 13 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild, 3 brothers: Daniel "Danny" Burbine (Cindy), Richard "Dicky" Burbine (Weepa), and Roger "Lucky" Reid (Dinah), and 15 nieces and nephews.
The Braunger Family is sincerely grateful to the Cottage Hospital MICU medical team for their dedication and care of Nancy, which was also generously extended to family at her bedside.
A rosary will be on Wednesday, September 4, 2013 at 4:00pm, with a funeral Mass on Thursday, September 5, 2013 at 10:00am, both held at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Montecito, CA.
