November 22, 1939 to September 2, 2013
Our beloved mother, Katy R. Closson passed peacefully on Labor Day in the morning at Mission Terrace. She is survived by her daughters, Jean Marie Skinner and Joan Diane Skinner, son-in- law Len Goldberg, and her three grandchildren - Erica, Hannah and Tony.
Katy had a full life. She was a deep thinker, a scientist and a business woman. Born in Santa Barbara, she raised her daughters here, and lived out her last years in this beautiful town she loved. She was known to us by many names: Katherine Lee Ranaldi, Katy, Kate, Muzzy, Momma Frog, Granny KT, and Mom. She was married twice, the second time to Don Closson, whom she loved deeply, and who provided for her and loved her until he passed a few years ago.
Mom worked all her life - starting off as a telephone operator, and finishing her career at UCSB. She became a teller at a local bank in Goleta, ending up at Bank of America, where she worked her way up into the loan department and ultimately managing it. In her retirement years she was the Historian at the electrician's union (IBEW), where she and Don Closson were members.
She was a diver, a swimmer, an artist, a musician, and a lover of science fiction and science fact. But, Katy's greatest gift was her ability to tell a good joke. She could start a story, build it up, and pop you with a punch line that you never saw coming. She brought a lot of joy to the people in her life with her amazing sense of humor and impeccable timing.
Katy will be missed by many, but especially by her two daughters, whom she raised as a single mom during their crazy teen years...and was always there to listen whenever they called as adults. And by her sisters, Linda Lee Hendrickson and Barbara Lee Connelly, and cousins Steve and Suzanne Ranaldi.
Please join Jeannie and Joni at an Open House in her honor at her home beginning at 4:00pm on Friday, September 6th. Those interested in making donations in her memory may send them to Hospice.
