GALLAGHER, Christine Sorensen
September 22, 2013 12:06 AM
Passed away peacefully in her sleep in Santa Barbara, California on Saturday, September 14, 2013 at the age of 85.
Born in Norwood, Ohio on February 12, 1928, Christine was the fourth child of Steen and Zora Sorensen. She grew up in the small town of Wyoming, Ohio. After high school she attended a year at Stephens College. To her delight, she was able to move west to Tucson with her parents in 1949. She always loved the west: the desert, geology, cowboy lore and the world's largest gem & mineral show. Christine graduated from University of Arizona in 1951 (Delta Zeta sorority). In 1951, Christine married Fred R. Gallagher, a fellow graduate of U of A.
Christine and Fred had two children in Tucson, before moving to Santa Barbara in 1968. In Santa Barbara, Christine greatly enjoyed reading all of Walter Tompkins' histories of the area. She worked as secretary of St. Raphael's church under Fr. Van Son. When her children were older, she worked in the Library Dept. at UCSB, from which she retired in 1988.
Retirement gave Christine the opportunity to move back to Tucson, where she could live comfortably near her sister. She spent her summers in the mountain town of Pinetop, Arizona. She always loved the wildlife around her. At home in Tucson, she enjoyed bowling, reading, time with her sister and her cats.
As a two-time survivor of cancer, Christine was able to celebrate 12 years of later life cancer-free before going to be with her Savior, Jesus Christ.
Christine is survived by her sister, Joan Wilson of Tucson, her two children, Fred A. (Michele) Gallagher of Santa Barbara and Kit Holmlund of Lompoc, and her four grandchildren, F. James and Cherie Gallagher, and Johnathan and Myles Holmlund.
Christine was able to spend the last months of her life near her children in Santa Barbara. Special thanks to Nona Cometa and her staff of Danelle's Home for the Elderly, for their professional and loving care of our mom.
A memorial will be held at 2pm Saturday, September 21 at Community Covenant Church at 5070 Cathedral Oaks Road. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be sent in Christine's name to the Humane Society or American Cancer Society.
