1951 - 2013
Carlyn Joyce Johnson-McFadden, 62, passed away on Thursday, September 19, 2013, at her home in Woodburn, Oregon after a lengthy illness. She was born in Ellensburg, Washington on April 24, 1951, to Bob and Bette Johnson. She grew up in Selah, Washington where she attended local schools, graduating from Selah High School where she was a gymnast and basketball cheerleader. After graduating from high school she attended classes at Washington State University for one year after which she and a friend decided they wanted an adventure. They opened a map and pointed to Santa Barbara so she loaded up her yellow1965 Mustang convertible and headed for California with her sister, Lisa. She landed in Santa Barbara in 1971 where she began working in a music store, then managing a beachside hotel and working for a doctor's office. In 1980 Carlyn began working at the Southern Gas Company while raising her children Shanna and Shane. There she met her soul mate, Hal McFadden. They were married on February 14, 1986 in a modest service attended by their children. After leaving the Gas Company, Carlyn worked as a real estate agent and later as a child care provider. In 2002, Carlyn was again on the move, packing up the motor home and setting out with Hal to follow their dream of touring the U.S. National Parks. Their dream was cut short when serious illness struck in Portland, Oregon where she and Hal remained until her passing.
Carlyn was an animal lover and advocate throughout her life, volunteering for the Santa Barbara Humane Society fostering kittens in her home in preparation for adoption. The family home was always filled with the sound of children, animals and often the sweet scent of tri-tip cooking on the grill. Her children and animals were the joy and passion of her life and she cared for us all with a kind and caring compassion she extended to her neighbors and friends. She loved the holidays and went to great lengths to bring holiday cheer into the family home for every occasion. Carlyn was an avid Seattle Seahawks fan and her Monday nights and Sunday afternoons were spent cheering on her home team. Her other hobbies included camping at the lake and in the desert, fishing, motorhome travel, NASCAR racing, and snow skiing throughout Colorado and Utah.
Carlyn leaves behind the love of her life, Hal McFadden of Woodburn, Oregon; her parents, Bob and Betty Johnson and sister Jane (Paul) Agee of Spokane, Washington; and her sister Lisa (Dave) Huysman of San Antonio, Texas. She is also survived by her children Shanna Anduri and Shane Klopp (Daniela) and step-children Kelly McFadden (Armando) Lara, and Tracy (Karen) McFadden as well as three grandchildren, Liliana Lara, Brody and Krista McFadden and numerous nieces and nephews.
Viewing will be on Thursday, September 26 from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Welch-Ryce-Haider Funeral Chapel, 450 Ward Drive, Goleta. The funeral service will be held at the same location on Friday at noon followed by burial at Goleta Cemetery.
Carlyn had fond memories of her many pets and the rescue animals she cared for throughout her life. In lieu of flowers any donations can be made to your local humane society in her name.
