BROWN, Katherine Scaroni

November 14, 2013 5:44 AM

April 25, 1916 - November 11, 2013

Loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend passed away peacefully at home on November 11, 2013. She was 97 years old.

Katherine was born on April 25, 1916 to pioneer Santa Marians Leopold Pio Scaroni and Flora Ann McNeil Scaroni.

She graduated from Santa Maria High School in 1934 and then went on to graduate from Armstrong Business School in Berkley, Cal in 1937. She was employed by Bank of America in San Francisco until 1943.

Katherine returned to Santa Maria and worked at Hancock Field Pilot Training Center in Santa Maria where she met and married Howard Lohman from Seattle. They had two children, Lance and Louise. Howard passed away in an airplane crash in 1947 and in 1950 she met and married Santa Maria cattleman, Dean Brown. They had a lasting life together for 56 years.

Dean and Katherine moved to the Santa Ynez Valley in 1957 after purchasing the Rancho Corral de Quati where they raised cattle and later in the early 1970s planted a vineyard of premium wine grapes.

Katherine was an avid gardener and played golf when she was younger. She and Dean loved to travel the world and were also enthusiastic sailors. They were members of the Santa Barbara Yacht Club and enjoyed their sail boats for many years while traveling to the Channel Islands and Mexico. Her children and grandchildren recall many wonderful summers sailing on the ocean.

Katherine was a member of the Minerva Club in Santa Maria, the Santa Ynez Valley Historical Society Board of Directors, the Santa Barbara County Cow Bells, and the California Cattlewomen's Assoc. She loved being a grandmother and great-grandmother as the years went by.

Katherine is survived by her children Lance (Judi) Brown and Louise (John) Feliciano, her grandchildren Heather (Mark) Lopes, Steven Brown, Demory Brown, Cybil (Tim) Nightingale and Douglas (Vanessa) Feliciano. She was also survived by four great-grandchildren, Victoria and Elizabeth Lopes, Scott and Connor Nightingale, her Sister-in-law Sally Scaroni and several nieces and nephews...

Katherine was predeceased by her parents Mr. and Mrs. Leo Scaroni, her sister Margaret Wainwright, her brother Paul Scaroni, brother and sister in-law Stan and Vennie Lee Brown, her step sister in-law Shirley Leppo and her beloved husband Dean Brown.

Katherine's family would like to sincerely thank AdelIa Lopez and all of her care giving staff for the loving care they showed not only for Katherine, but also their father Dean. They were blessed to have been in your care.

A celebration of Katherine's life will be Monday, November 18, 2013 at 2:00pm at 5999 Foxen Canyon Road, Los Olivos, CA.

Private Interment will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Ballard, CA.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The California Agricultural Leadership Foundation P.O. Box 479, Salinas, CA. 93902-0479 or The Santa Ynez Valley Cottage Hospital, 2050 Viborg Road, Solvang, Ca. 93463

Arrangements are under the direction of Dudley-Hoffman Mortuary and Crematory, Santa Maria, CA.
