born October 31, 1916 and passed away on July 19, 2006 in Santa Barbara Ca.
He was well known in the agricultural industry for his expertise in orchid cultivation. Right after graduating from Gardena High School, he began working beside his father, at Wright's Greenhouse in the Los Angeles area. After serving his time in the US Army in the 3rd Armored Division he returned to work at Shinoda Bros. Nursery. In 1963 he moved his family from Redondo Beach CA to work for David Shinoa at San Lorenzo Nursery in Goleta CA until it was sold and then he continued for awhile at Por La Mar as a consultant before his retirement at the age of 77.
He enjoyed collecting antiques, clocks, watches, stamps and coins. He was an avid fisherman and always wanted to travel to places he had never seen before. With his agricultural upbringing he was always working in his garden to provide fruits and vegetables for his family and friends. All of us feel he was born with a green thumb and enjoyed the fruits of his labor he so prided himself with.
He was preceded by his wife Carol, who passed in 1973. Also preceded by PJ Kelleher who gave him an extended family to add to his own, Bill, Tom, Betty and Nanci.
He is survived by his son John Wener, daughter Nancy Ford (Brian) sister Alice Gleason (Richard), nephew Mike, grandchildren, Melanie Ford Noffz, Angela Ford Benavidez (Andy), Lisa Wener Silva, Ruby Wener Al-Raebi, and great grand children Janelle, Gregory and Bonnie, Diego, and Adnan as well as his extended family.
In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to a fund for Sonny's favorite niece in his honor to help assist students training in Occupational Therapy.
