Jackson family dinner

Sheltered from the sun, Michael Jackson leaves court on Friday with his mother, Katherine, by his side.

A handful of Michael Jackson fans were rewarded for their patience Friday night when their hero appeared in downtown Santa Barbara to pop into Epiphany restaurant for dinner.

Mr. Jackson was accompanied by a small group including his mother and three brothers.

Preceded by bodyguards in black business suits, the singer pulled up in a black SUV just before 7 p.m., drawing curious glances from passers-by. He slipped into the side door of the Victoria Street restaurant and disappeared into a reserved room at the rear with the shades drawn over the windows. Other diners may not have realized he was there.

The only obvious sign that Mr. Jackson was recognized came when Maurizio Carbone, a waiter at neighboring Olio E Limone restaurant, emerged and called to a bodyguard half jokingly, "Hey, why don't you come and tell him to come into my restaurant."

The fans, two wearing Mr. Jackson's trademark black fedoras, showed up half an hour before their idol. Several still sported the yellow adhesive passes issued by the Santa Barbara Sheriff's Department to audience members at the Santa Maria courtroom Friday where Mr. Jackson and his family listened to testimony by the mother of the child he is accused of molesting.
