Career Moves - The ABC's Of Success
By Jim Pawlak

Time for another lesson in the ABC's of Success. Think of these definitions as you execute your career and life plans.

Albatross - a handicap, burden or heavy cross to bear. People who don't stay on top of what's happening in their field will carry the woulda-coulda-shoulda weight when they realize that their career has reached an early plateau.

Bifacial - two-faced, hypocritical. Avoid people with these traits. If you must deal with such people, watch your back.

Clique - a group of insiders who greet outsiders with a collective cold shoulder. Before you decide you need to be one of the insiders, make sure you know the price you'll eventually pay for acceptance.

Different - unlike, dissimilar. You can learn more from those who don't share your views, than you can from those who do.

E-lance - creating a job and career based on the opportunities provided by the continually-evolving Internet.

Freedom - the condition of being free from restraints. What you do after something has been done to you is the true measure of exercising individual freedom.

Guilty - being responsible for doing something wrong. Too often, managers place blame rather than helping the guilty party learn from the experience. Too often, workers won't accept responsibility for their actions.

Hunger - strongly desiring or craving something. Those with a constant hunger for knowledge can look forward to exciting careers.

Ingenuity - inventive skill, cleverness. The greatest advances in society were made by ingenious people who weren't satisfied with preserving the status quo.

Job - a state of employment that everyone wants but few look forward to on a Monday morning. If you do look forward to going to work on Monday and every other workday, you are truly funemployed.

Killjoy - a person who spoils the enthusiasm and fun of others. Perpetually negative people excel at bringing others down to their level.

Lull - an interval of lessened activity. It's OK to take a breather when things get hectic, but the longer your lull, the longer it will take to attain your goal.

Momentum - the force of inner drive that propels us forward. If you want to increase your momentum, get out of your way.

Nimble - quick and agile in movement. In this age of technochange and speed, one must be to able adapt to keep plans on track.

Outcome - a probable result or expectation. Effort in planning and executing any task ultimately determines its outcome.

Procrastination - the art of trying to keep up with yesterday. Delays impede progress.

Quality of Life - a positive attribute. It's often what an industrialized nation is said to offer despite the fact its workforce suffers from stress and burnout.

Recidivism - relapse into a former pattern of behavior. It's easier to do nothing than do something, especially when one gets discouraged.

State-of-the-art - soon to be obsolete. Change is the only constant in the workworld.

Tactics - securing objectives by executing a carefully designed strategy. One's tactics are as important as one's knowledge when implementing a plan.

Urgent - management by crisis. Things become urgent because they weren't done when they were first judged important.

Vacillate - swing indecisively from one course of action to another. Vacillators usually suffer from analysis paralysis and accomplish little.

What - which thing. The key word in asking yourself about your goals and aspirations, as well as how you plan to get there.

X ray - to see inside. A look inside yourself tells whether you're doing your best or just doing enough to get by.

Yo-yo - the ups and downs of life. You control the string, so you can make your life do tricks. Just don't make your life's yo-yo sleep too long.

Zilch - zero. When you put little effort in, expect nothing in return.
