Mexico gunmen kill 2 police officers, assault headquarters in separate attacks

May 14, 2008 5:53 PM: MEXICO CITY (AP) - Officials say two police officers were shot and killed in northern Mexico when they tried to stop gunmen from kidnapping a family. State prosecutor Carlos Centeno says the attackers also threw grenades Wednesday at the officers in the city of Torreon. Torreon is in Coahuila state, which borders Texas. In a separate attack, assailants opened fire and threw grenades at a police station in Guamuchil in the northern state of Sinaloa. No one was injured. More»

Pentagon official ousted from Guantanamo case says he's not resigning post
May 14, 2008 5:33 PM: SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) - A Pentagon official said Wednesday he will not resign as legal adviser to war-crimes tribunals at Guantanamo, despite his removal from the trial of Osama bin Laden's driver because of a lack of impartiality. Venezuela's Chavez says he'll try to contact Colombian rebels to secure hostages' release
May 14, 2008 5:27 PM: CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) - President Hugo Chavez said Wednesday he will try to re-establish contacts with Colombian rebels in an attempt to win freedom for more hostages held by the guerrillas. Chavez said he spoke by phone with French President Nicolas Sarkozy and offered to ''try to make contact'' with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC. May 14, 2008 5:12 PM: BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) - Colombian police seized US$25 million (euro16 million) in properties Wednesday from a paramilitary warlord extradited to the U.S. on drug-trafficking charges. Russia launches cargo ship with supplies for space station
May 14, 2008 5:04 PM: MOSCOW (AP) - An unmanned Russian cargo ship blasted off Thursday with supplies, equipment and gifts for the international space station, an official said. Mission Control spokesman Valery Lyndin said the ship is carrying about 2.5 short tons of oxygen, water and food for the crew - U.S. astronaut Garrett Reisman and Russian cosmonauts Sergei Volkov and Oleg Kononenko. Residents: missile strike hits Pakistan village
May 14, 2008 4:44 PM: KHAR, Pakistan (AP) - A suspected missile strike late Wednesday destroyed a house and killed about a dozen people in a Pakistan border village that was targeted by the U.S. military two years ago in the hunt for al-Qaida's No. 2 leader. May 14, 2008 4:42 PM: LONDON (AP) - Beleaguered Prime Minister Gordon Brown won a rare cheer from his own ranks after unveiling a raft of new policies Wednesday, part of move to reinvigorate his tenure that could also include appearing on a reality TV show.
