Veronica Binkley transformed Harding into a desirable academic destination. At one time, families that lived in the neighborhood looked to transfer out of the district. Under Binkley, families were looking to transfer in.

Binkley led an academic and cultural renaissance at the elementary school. Under her leadership, students’ test scores increased, she implemented new programs and created an outdoor classroom and STEAM lab.

She also strengthened the International Baccalaureate program and partnership with UC Santa Barbara and created a community school that gained the trust of the neighborhood.

One of her biggest goals as principal in the 2024-2025 school year was to meet 50% for reading and math scores.

“I promised the kids, look, if we can make or break 50%, then I’ll camp on the roof of Harding,” Binkley said. “Come to find out, you can’t camp on the roof of the school.”

While they were just shy of meeting their 50% goal — they reached 48.93% in reading and 44.85% in math—it was still higher than the state average of 48.8% in reading and 37.3% in math.

So she settled on getting “slimed” in front of the kids instead.

Dozens of bikers hung out outside of Talevi’s Wine and Spirits in Santa Barbara on their way up to Goleta Beach on Sunday, August 9.

Many people rode their bikes together up State Street, with a few stragglers still catching up to the group parked along Hollister Avenue Sunday afternoon.

As people mingled and music blasted from different speakers, Ken Betz from Georgia shared his thoughts of the event with the News-Press.

It’s Betz’s fifth year traveling to Santa Barbara to participate in the event.

News crews at Santa Barbara’s KEYT-TV strike Wednesday morning.

The bold action is intended to pressure the station’s Missouri-based ownership after nearly two years of newsroom strife over wages and working conditions.

The move threw into question the station’s ability to serve its news audiences across five separate broadcasts Wednesday, on a day reporters and videographers would typically criss-cross Fiesta mercados for images and interviews.

Instead of covering fires, car crashes, politics or any other stories, broadcast journalists said they’d trade the airwaves for the picket line and public outreach. Management reportedly learned about the plan Monday night.

Alexander Barone moved to Goleta to raise two children, five months and two-and-a-half-years old.

But 18 months after relocating, Barone said he might move his family out, after learning that a gun store would occupy a storefront next to the local daycare where his children are enrolled.

“The only thing separating them is a see-through chain link fence,” Barone said. “Our kids will be playing in the playground that looks directly into a gun store.”

Barone is among the hundreds of community members urging Goodland Guns—which secured a 25-year lease for 7443 Hollister Ave in July—to leave the site. The building was formerly occupied by 7-Eleven.

The gun store is next to the Here We Grow Early Learning Center, a daycare and preschool that opened in January, and down the road from Ellwood Elementary. It also neighbors a bike lane that students take on the way to school.

Dan Ashton said he believes parents have adopted a double standard. Goodland Guns operated another location in Oldtown Goleta near the Rainbow School, an early childhood care center, for around 13 years.

“Parents are okay with it as long as it’s not in their neighborhood,” he said.

Goleta’s city codes classified Goodland Guns as a sporting goods store, which the zoning in the area allowed for, said Councilmember Stuart Kasdin, whose district encompasses the property.

While Summer usually means smaller surf for Santa Barbara, strong hurricanes in the tropical Pacific can bring powerful South swells towards the coastline of Santa Barbara and Ventura counties.

Rip currents are channels of water flowing out to sea through the path of least resistance. To spot rip currents, look for turbulent or lighter colored water and areas where the waves seem to stop or weaken due to water flowing away from the shore.

It is important to be aware of the risks associated with larger waves, such as strong currents, and how to stay safe in them. News-Press reporter Aston Smith met with Casey Graham from the SB county lifeguards and SB Fire Captain Derek Doler to discuss what swimmers can do to stay safe.

Dallas Cowboys training camp marks 20th season in Oxnard

The Dallas Cowboys took over Oxnard on Saturday, with a dazzling display of showmanship, cheerleading and speeches, to kick off the team’s annual training camp.

Opening ceremonies took place at River Ridge Playing Fields. Hundreds of cars lined up at the entrance on Ventura Road, some waiting hours to get in.

Owner and General Manager of the Dallas Cowboys Jerry Jones delivered the welcome speech.

Jones highlighted the adversity and hard work the team and DCC’s have gone through to get where they are today.

“What you get to see here, what you’re seeing when you see our cheerleaders, you’re seeing individuals that have worked and worked and worked,” Jones said to the crowd. “The story is you got to put it all out there and sometimes that’s not enough, so you have to put more.”
