If your peaches, nectarines, plums, or apricots barely fruited this year—or your olive tree looked confused—you weren’t imagining it. The problem isn’t bad luck. It’s that our winters are no longer cold enough.
Stone fruit depends on chill hours: hours in the winter between 32°F and 45°F that allow trees to complete dormancy and bloom normally in spring. Too little chill means delayed flowering, fewer blossoms, poor fruit set, and disappointing harvests. Coastal Santa Barbara is steadily losing those cold hours.
You’ll still find beautiful peaches at the Farmers’ Market, but they aren’t grown here. Increasingly, they come from colder inland valleys where winter nights remain cool enough. Last winter, the Santa Barbara weather station recorded 186 chill hours while the Goleta Foothills station recorded zero.
That matters because most peaches, nectarines, Japanese plums, apricots, and pluots need 150 to 400 or more chill hours each winter. Sweet cherries need far more. Only a handful of ultra-low-chill varieties remain reasonably suited to the coast, and even those are living on borrowed time.
An El Niño winter could make matters worse. A few degrees of additional warmth can erase many of the chill hours fruit trees need. If current warming trends continue, coastal Santa Barbara may soon reach the point where growing reliable stone fruit crops becomes the exception rather than the rule.
Should we really care if local peaches disappear? By themselves, probably not. But peaches are a remarkably visible climate indicator. They are telling us something that computer models have been predicting for decades: Santa Barbara’s climate is changing in ways we can now see in our own backyards.
The same warming that robs fruit trees of winter chill is increasing wildfire and debris-flow risk, raising sea levels, threatening waterfront infrastructure, stressing water supplies, and making drought more frequent and costly. Losing peaches won’t be the tragedy. It will simply be one more sign that the climate many of us grew up with is quietly disappearing.
If you’d rather not watch that happen, the biggest actions individuals can take are also well established. The 2022 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change 2022: identifies three standouts:
- Transportation: Drive less, walk, bike, use public transit, and reduce air travel.
- Home energy: Switch to renewable electricity, improve insulation, and replace gas appliances with efficient electric alternatives.
- Food: Eat a more plant-rich diet and waste less food.
None of us can solve climate change alone. But we can decide whether we’re part of the problem—or part of the solution.
