Good morning, Santa Barbara ☀️
Here’s what we have for you today:
- A multi-vehicle crash in Montecito in the early a.m. halts southbound traffic as crews clean up fluids spilled into the road from a semi-truck. No timetable yet on re-opening.
- Santa Barbara City Councilmembers Meagan Harmon and Wendy Santamaria collide over rent stabilization ordinance amendments. Sofia Wallace was at the meeting and has the story.
- Santa Barbara resident Kristin Flickinger makes her debut on reality show “Survivor.” Can she win? Julianna Lozada spoke to her about how she prepared for the show.
- Congressman Salud Carbajal shows his support for Solvang workers, joining them as they picketed on Wednesday. The workers are striking for higher wages, Tom Schultz braved the Solvang heat to get the story.
- Ventura is wrestling with serious Flock surveillance cameras and thousands of unauthorized Flock queries. News-Press reporter Kaitlin Sweeney was on the scene in Ventura to bring you the scoop.
- We have an incredible story today from Lillian Perlmutter, statewide immigration reporter for the Santa Barbara News-Press.
Along the U.S.-Mexico border, migrants die within sight of the surveillance cameras meant to find them, Perlmutter reports. The phenomenon is especially pronounced in the mountains east of San Diego. It was here, on a September afternoon, that Graciela Gómez Hernández sent her family a final message.

Looking back 23 years ago today.
So 23 years ago I wrote the two stories below? Is that possible? It was definitely a busy day for me, but what is most notable is the clip below where the council was considering a policy to require developers to include below-market units for rent. It’s an all-star cast of officials quoted in the story, including Gregg Hart, Iya Falcone, Roger Horton, Babatunde Folayemi and others.
