Manuel Norman Chavez, known as “Norm,” was born in Santa Barbara on 11/23/40, and passed away peacefully in his hometown on the morning of 5/5/26, at the age of 85. Norm was the beloved son of Manuel Chavez, Sr., and was raised by his mother, Kathleen F. Ruiz, and her husband, Everett M. Ruiz.
At his core, Norm was a devoted son, father, brother, grandfather, uncle, and friend whose warmth and presence touched many lives.
He was preceded in death by his father, Manuel Chavez, Sr., and his mother, Kathleen Ruiz. He is
survived by his children, Manny, Cammie, and Rachel; his brother, Larry “Buddy”; his sister, Kathy
“Skunky”; and his six cherished grandchildren. Norm will be remembered for his love of family, his strength, and the lasting impact he made on those who knew him.
Norm attended Dolores School and Catholic High School before transferring to and graduating from Santa Barbara High School. He later served in the United States Marine Corps before spending more than 40 years working as a plasterer throughout Santa Barbara County.
He took great pride in his hard work, reliability, and making sure to always show up for others.
Norm celebrated 38 years of sobriety on Nov. 3, 2025, and was a devoted friend of Bill W. He
deeply valued the fellowship and community he found there and cherished the many lifelong friendships he made over the years.
He was calm, smooth, sweet, reliable, generous, and always funny. He was the kind of person who would help anyone without hesitation and light up a room and make anyone feel welcome.
Whether it was giving someone a ride, picking up Rachel’s friends from games, volunteering at Notre Dame School, or showing up faithfully to every sporting event, school function, or community gathering, Norm was always there.
His presence made people feel safe, cared for, and supported. Norm touched countless lives through his kindness, humility, and quiet strength. He valued community deeply and
formed lasting friendships everywhere he went. Norm loved simple pleasures: a good cup of coffee, eating sweet treats with his daughter Rachel, watching sports, and was known as a local celebrity at Denny’s.
He was also a devoted parishioner at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, where he attended weekly
services faithfully. Wherever he went, people were always excited to see him walk through the door.
More than anything, Norm will be remembered for his gentle spirit and the way he consistently showed up for the people he loved. He lived a life rooted in service, compassion, humor, and community—and his absence will be deeply felt by all who knew him.
We invite you to join us in honoring and celebrating Norm’s life on Friday, June 26, 2026. A church service will be held at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, followed by a celebration of life at noon at Oak Park.
