Daybreak newsletter logo

Today’s newsletter is jam-packed with amazing content. We bring you eight stories today that highlight exactly the type of diverse content we love to bring you. I want to highlight just a few things.

  • The allegations against farmworker activist César Chávez shocked the world this week. Below is a story about how Santa Barbara is already looking to change the street named after him. The story digs into the News-Press archives to explain how and why a portion of Salsipuedes Street was renamed after Chavez in 1997.

It also includes comments from Rep. Salud Carbajal, Assemblyman Gregg Hart, former Marty Blum and Santa Barbara City Councilman Oscar Gutierrez — and their views on Chavez’s legacy and changing the name back.
  • Tom Schultz explains what happens now after Sable started pumping and transporting oil for the first time in a decade. Schultz carefully unpacks why the situation matters, why activists and state agencies are upset and the legal steps that follow. Note: A major rally and protest is planned for tonight on Cabrillo Boulevard.
  • Schultz doubles down this week with his contributions, explaining the change with mixed-status households and how Section 8 voucher money could disappear altogether in homes where a non-citizen lives.
  • Joy Martin attended a key meeting on Highway 101 and explains the latest changes planned for the remaining portion of the Highway 101 widening project, a multi-year effort to ease congestion along the South Coast.

Check out other important stories on the Harbor Restaurant, the opening of Sunstone’s Coast Village Road tasting room, an increase in cannabis taxes, the message behind teen theater company Youthclusive and its “High School Musical” show this weekend (and don’t miss Aston Smith’s compelling video on the program, where director Chloe Voigt explains why she started the theater company).

It’s an honor to be part of an innovative and cutting-edge nonprofit newsroom that is only just beginning its journey. Please forward this newsletter to a friend and tell them to subscribe. We love this community and are grateful for the support.

“That 10-, 11- or even 12-cent increase on what is a luxury recreational item seems to me quite a reasonable policy decision to make.”
