Welcome to our special Santa Barbara mayor’s debate edition!
- More than 240 packed The New Vic Theatre on Thursday night for the Santa Barbara Mayor’s Debate, hosted by the Santa Barbara News-Press and Newsmakers with JR.
- Candidates Eric Friedman, Wendy Sims-Moten and Kristen Sneddon answered questions about the Santa Barbara budget, rent stabilization, housing, State Street and much more.
- I served as moderator, along with Jerry Roberts.
- News-Press reporter Amanda Velasco covered the event, which you can read in our story below.

One of the highlights of the event was introducing the Santa Barbara News-Press team to the crowd.
Several elected officials and activists were spotted at the event, including former Santa Barbara Mayor Helene Schneider, councilmembers Mike Jordan, Wendy Santamaria, Santa Barbara Unified School Board members Gabe Escobedo and Sunita Beall, planning commissioner Devon Wardlow, and City Council candidates Alexander Stoeber (District 6), Ian Baucke (District 5) and James Zurlinden (District 5). The lights were bright inside so these are just some of the faces I remember seeing and some I spoke to.
I also appreciate local journalists John Palminteri, Ryan P. Cruz and student journalist extraordinaire Ethan Maday showing up to report on the event. (Sorry if I missed anyone!)
News-Press general manager Will Belfiore closed the show with a rousing speech about the return of the News-Press.
The forum will air on TV Santa Barbara, as well as my YouTube channel, Santa Barbara Talks with Josh Molina and Jerry Roberts’ channel, Newsmakers with JR. We’ll provide you with links next week!
