News reports last week revealed a sad situation on the USS Abraham Lincoln. According to multiple reports, crew members have been experiencing food shortages, plumbing problems and declining mental health during a nine-month deployment.

The situation reminded me of the time a team of News-Press reporters and local media spent three days aboard the Lincoln in 2000. The media was granted rare access to living conditions on the ship.

At the time, I wrote: “Life aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln is loud and dangerous in the flight deck, stressful and nervous in the control tower and frustrating and demanding for the sailors below.”

About 5,000 passengers were on the ship as the crew engaged in a simulated battle with a false country called “Nari,” as we reported at the time.

I remember walking away from that trip with a tremendous amount of respect for the crew, and an appreciation that I could go home after three days. My friend and former News-Press photographer Mike Eliason took photos of life on the ship.
