Happy Father’s Day!

It’s a big weekend in Santa Barbara. Not only will we be celebrating fathers, but the Summer Solstice and Juneteenth celebrations are here.

  • We’ll provide coverage of the big event with videos, photos and stories, including the parade on Saturday.
  • The parade begins at noon and runs along Santa Barbara Street from Ortega to Sola streets, with the festival at Alameda Park.
  • The public is also invited to celebrate the life of community activist Loretta Redd, who died earlier this year, on Saturday. Friends and family are gathering at 5 p.m. at the Santa Barbara County Courthouse Mural Room. Reporter Tom Schultz has a news obituary here, and K-Lite on-air personality and superstar Catherine Remak has a tribute piece here.
  • On Friday, Santa Barbara will celebrate Juneteenth from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Plaza del Mar Park. The event celebrates Black culture, talent and joy. Events are also planned in Lompoc on Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Finally, standout columnist Lynn Montgomery has penned a fitting tribute for Father’s Day, which falls this Sunday.

The News-Press welcomes its sixth intern this week. Amanda Velasco joins us from UCLA, where she is an editor at The Daily Bruin. She wrote a story on her first day, covering a City Hall meeting about bicycle and pedestrian safety.

Send her an email at amanda.velasco@newspress.com to welcome her, or better yet, send some story ideas.

  • We have several stories in today’s newsletter. Our team is working hard to explain not only what happened, but why it happened.
  • Tom Schultz and I have compelling reads about the city & county budgets.

COMING UP: I’ll sit down with Dawn Hobbs on the latest episode of my Santa Barbara Talks with Josh Molina podcast. Hobbs was the definitive reporter on the Michael Jackson trial 21 years ago. Netflix just came out with a three-part series on the Santa Maria trial.

Hobbs and I are old News-Press colleagues, and it’s great to catch up about the documentary, Jackson, journalism, old times and what’s ahead. The episode is up this weekend, and I will have a write-up in the News-Press next week.

Thanks for reading and supporting journalism in Santa Barbara.
