April is a big month for the Santa Barbara News-Press.

We’ll soon be announcing multiple new hires in the newsroom. These additions will bolster our news coverage and allow us to provide a combination of daily stories as well as in-depth, investigative articles.

Your support has been off the charts since we relaunched in January. With philanthropic support from other nonprofit organizations, individual financial contributions and even donations of office furniture, it’s clear this community has welcomed back the News-Press with open arms.

It makes sense to support local news by embracing a nonprofit news organization. The News-Press’ history in this community dates back 155 years, and the most important stories in our community have appeared here.

In addition to our new hires, we will soon be announcing a robust team of paid interns who will join us this summer. Our newsroom in downtown Santa Barbara, located across from the Granada Theatre, will be ground zero for providing local news. (Speaking of interns, check out the below clip of one of my first stories as a News-Press intern in 1995.)

In the meantime, we have a couple of events we’d like to invite you to. General Manager Will Belfiore and I will have coffee at 9 a.m. April 18 at Cajé, in the 800 block of State Street. Please join us. We’re happy to chat all things News-Press and journalism.

Later in the month, author Susan Page will give a talk about her book “The Queen and Her Presidents” at the CEC Hub, 1219 State St. The event, to be held 6-8 p.m. April 23, is free, so check it out.

I had my first byline in the News-Press 31 years ago. Thousands of stories later, I am still here and still loving the community where I was born.

And thanks to readers like you, we are continuing that tradition. We’re grateful and thank you for supporting nonprofit local news.
