Songs of the summer

I asked the reporters, staff and interns here at the News-Press to let me know their walkout song — you know, the song that motivates them to have the best day ever. Here’s what they said, exactly, in the order of their responses.

Julianna Lozada: “Crown on the Ground” by Sleigh Bells. This noisy, dance-punk anthem always gets me going whenever I hit the midday slump. I love the abrasive, ear-blasting guitars layered with Alexis Krauss’ perfect pop vocals. I listen whenever a second cup of coffee isn’t enough.

Tom Schultz: While it’s not my all-time favorite song, my pick for my morning walkout is “Here Comes the Sun” by The Beatles. Yeah, it’s a totally obvious choice, but there’s no denying its mood-inducing greatness. I’ll sing it to my 9-year-old when I’m opening the blinds and waking her up for school. And if she actually gets up in a reasonable time frame, I’m even more stoked for the day.

Roman Trovato: “Check the Rhime” by A Tribe Called Quest. Probably the funkiest song of the whole album. I can’t not be put in a good mood when I hear this one. The album was instrumental in introducing hip-hop to jazz instrumentals, a feat that is on full display in this song.

Angel Corzo: “BOOGIE” by Brockhampton: I remember seeing Brockhampton perform this song live at Coachella to close off their final performance together as a boy band. It’s chaotic, it’s fun and it never fails to hype me up. I’ll play this song when I need an extra push on a run, or if I’m driving in my car with the windows down.

Kaitlin Sweeney: “Back To Me” by Griz. This song’s from his most recent album and is my current fixation. The way he blends funk, soul, live sax and bass music into a sound that is unmistakably his own. I got to experience him live for the first time at Seven Stars, which ended up being one of the most incredible weekends I’ve had, so his music never fails to lift me up.

Viviana Ruiz: My walkout song would be “Baila Conmigo” because I’m a big Dodgers fan. Since I grew up watching the Dodgers, that song just hypes me up and I think has a nice uplifting beat to it.

Amanda Velasco: “Dancing On My Own” by Robyn. I experienced it for the first time when I watched “Voicemails for Isabelle” on Netflix. This song feels like girlhood and it never fails to uplift my spirits!

Katherine Ball: I listen to “Not My Job” by FLO because it’s fun to sing along to. It seems like there’s always a new harmony to find.

Joshua Molina: “Ablaze” by Alanis Morissette always gives me goosebumps. The song talks about the importance of staying connected with your children and navigating how they grow up and change while reminding them that good families never go away. “My mission is to keep the light in your eyes ablaze,” she sings.
