I am more of a baseball guy, but for many, World Cup fever has arrived.
Two FIFA World Cup soccer teams recently practiced on the South Coast, and the Santa Barbara News-Press was there to capture the moments.
The Austrian team held a media day at UCSB’s Harder Stadium near Goleta, and Qatar practiced at Westmont in Montecito.
Viviana Ruiz, Aston Smith and Juliana Lozada covered all the action with interviews, photos and videos. You can find their work on our social media channels and at newspress.com.
The FIFA World Cup runs June 11-19 and features 48 teams instead of the traditional 32.

Graduations: It’s commencement time. The News-Press will be covering local high school graduations.
If you know of any outstanding grads, let us know and we would be delighted to consider feature stories on them. These don’t have to be students with straight A’s. We want to showcase anyone with unique character, compassion, creativity or commitment. Send an email to jmolina@newspress.com.
This day in history: Speaking of graduation stories, I found a fun story from the News-Press archives about a grad who got more than a diploma.

I don’t know if any local dealerships are giving away used cars after prom parties these days, but it sounded like a fun thing back then. News-Press reporter Camilla Cohee (Barnwell) made the most of the assignment, explaining the challenges of driving a stick shift in 2000. And Mike Eliason captured the moment perfectly with his photo.
News-Press update: It’s been about five months since I have been “back,” and I am overwhelmed daily by the continued support. All of our analytics are through the roof, and I am balancing my time editing (even some reporting) and planning for the future. Our audience is growing — on social media, the website and newsletters.
But we are really just getting started. Please forward this newsletter to someone you know who is not subscribing and let them know the News-Press has returned as a nonprofit community journalism publication.

“The promise that they made that their additional production is going to benefit Californians is a lie. … Oil that’s produced in California is sold at global prices. We don’t get any discount, we don’t get any benefit, and we bear all the risks..”
