A fire on Santa Rosa Island continued to burn on Monday afternoon, surpassing 10,000 acres.
A U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Ventura MH-60T Jayhawk aircrew rescued a 67-year-old mariner after his sailboat crashed into the rocks at Santa Rosa Island, Friday.
The man was uninjured and successfully hoisted aboard at 10:38 a.m. after spending the night stranded on the island, according to the Coast Guard.
“The sailor fired emergency flares to signal for help, which inadvertently sparked a wildfire that grew to 1,000 acres by Friday afternoon,” the Coast Guard said in a post. “The aircrew located the mariner, deployed a rescue swimmer, and hoisted him to safety before transferring him to awaiting medical personnel at Camarillo Airport.”
Santa Rosa Island is about 27 miles off the coast of Santa Barbara County.
According to the California Department of Forestry and Protection, there is a continued threat to structures, endangered species, and cultural resources.
Also on Monday, evacuations are underway for a fire that broke out in Simi Valley Monday, and has since spread into Ventura County.
The fire, as of about 1:43 p.m., had burned about 720 acres.
An evacuation shelter has been setup at Simi Valley High School, 5400 Cochran St. in Simi Valley.
About 200 firefighters have been assigned and are supported by three air tankers and six helicopters.
