At least one person died and 14 people are injured after a car going the wrong way collided head-on into a Chumash Casino bus on the southbound 101 highway north of Los Alamos, Friday morning, authorities said.
At around 3:17 am, Santa Barbara County Fire Department and other emergency personnel responded to the crash. The 14 injured were taken to hospital.
The crash sparked a fire and engulfed the bus into flames. The passengers on the bus exited before the fire reached the bus.
“Most importantly, we are thankful that all 14 of our Team Members were able to safely evacuate the bus, be accounted for following the crash and avoid any further harm,” Kenneth Kahn, tribal chairman for the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians said in a statement to the News-Press. “We would also like to express our sincere appreciation to the first responders, law enforcement personnel, and medical teams for their swift and professional response. As we continue to support our Team Members and their families, we remain grateful for the outpouring of concern, compassion, and support from our community.”
