The Santa Barbara News-Press has hired Angel Corzo as its third full-time reporter.
Corzo graduated from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo in June, with a bachelor’s degree in journalism. He joins Julianna Lozada and Tom Schultz as the first full-time reporters hired by the News-Press following its reorganization as a nonprofit news outlet.
“Santa Barbara has always caught my eye since the moment I moved here for City College,” Corzo said. “Working at the News-Press feels like a full-circle moment for me; I built the foundation of my journalism knowledge in Josh Molina’s introductory class at SBCC, and now I’m working my first full-time job in the industry under his management at this reimagined publication.”
Corzo graduated from Santa Barbara City College, where he was editor-in-chief of the award-winning student newspaper, The Channels. He then transferred to Cal Poly, where he worked as a DEI reporter on the data and investigations team.
Corzo, who speaks Spanish, previously interned at the San Luis Obispo Tribune, covering federal immigration enforcement, and breaking news. He also worked breaking news shifts during the weekends.
Although he is early in his career, his resume runs deep. He was a reporting fellow at statewide news publication, CalMatters, where he reported on higher education and advancements in technology and AI within the California State University system.
Corzo will cover immigration, courts, social justice and higher education for the News-Press, as well as general assignment stories.
“My goal is to tell stories of real people in the community who have been affected by decisions made in and around Santa Barbara,” Corzo said. “I work to hold those in power accountable.”

In addition to Corzo, Lozada and Schultz, the News-Press also has six paid interns this summer as part of the Sara Miller McCune News-Press Summer Fellows program. The interns, Viviana Ruiz, Aston Smith, Kaitlin Sweeney, Roman Trovato, Sofia Wallace and Amanda Velasco round out the growing newsroom.
