As Santa Barbara County residents endure another high fire season, a new, AI-powered space technology could transform the way fire departments fight the blazes.
Three wildfire detection satellites launched into orbit from Vandenberg Space Force last Tuesday, which use AI to detect wildfires — as small as schoolyard fires — before they grow out-of-control.
Over the past year, California has dealt with a series of destructive blazes — from the 2025 Los Angeles County wildfires in Altadena and the Pacific Palisades to one just 30 miles away, on Santa Rosa Island fire, which threatened the livelihood of several native species.
“The FireSat launch marks a transformative step toward space-enabled wildfire intelligence, strengthening California’s resilience and demonstrating the power of global collaboration in confronting increasingly complex fire years,” CAL FIRE Director and Fire Chief Joe Tyler said in a statement.
FireSat is the first satellite system designed specifically for detecting wildfires, adding to California’s growing interest in powerful climate technology. In three months, the Google-funded satellites will begin delivering real-time information to fire agencies on where fires are happening and how they’re progressing.
Previously, fire departments have relied on data from satellites not intended for wildfire detection, providing data that couldn’t keep up to speed with how fast and how big fires were growing.
The satellite system could save the US over $1 billion in fire damage costs and protect 3,500 homes and properties annually, according to Muon Space, the California-based spacecraft manufacturer that built the satellites.
The global nonprofit Earth Fire Alliance partnered with CAL FIRE in developing the satellite system through early testing and concept evaluation.
Alliance board member and former CAL FIRE Chief Deputy Director, Chris Anthony, said the satellites represent “a fundamental shift in how we understand, detect, and respond to wildfire.”
Gov. Gavin Newsom applauded the agency for its leadership in transforming FireSat from “an emerging idea into a global wildfire-intelligence capability.”
By 2030, the nonprofit plans to launch a constellation of 50 satellites with the ability to scan fires across the globe every 20 minutes.
The governor also used the launch of the satellite system to highlight California as a global leader in building wildfire detection technology.
“FireSat is about more than satellites in the sky,” Newsom said. “It’s about protecting families, firefighters, and communities that live with the fear of wildfire every summer.”
