Grasses, sedges, and rushes have rightfully earned a prominent place in our gardens and landscapes. Whether used as low-water alternatives to conventional lawns or focal points, for erosion control or bioswales, or massed in meadow, woodland, or desert compositions, hundreds of species and cultivars of these garden-worthy plants are now available. Local experts Robert Abe and Carol Bornstein will present live specimens and images of options for texture, movement, and color.
After studying horticulture at Cal Poly SLO, Robert Abe began his life-long career in the nursery business. He is currently owner of Grassland Growers in Carpinteria, which specializes in grasses and grass-like plants. Carol Bornstein is a horticulturist, garden designer, and co-author of California Native Plants for the Garden. Her love of grasses began while she was a horticulturist at Santa Barbara Botanic Garden and continued when she became director of the Nature Gardens at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County.
