All junior high schools in the Santa Barbara Unified School District will require registration and permits on students’ e-bikes this year.
Dos Pueblos, San Marcos, Alta Vista and La Cuesta high schools will also implement these requirements.
The requirements are part of the district’s e-bike safety education, registration, and permitting program. The program piloted at La Colina Junior High and Adams Elementary School last year.
Santa Barbara High School will not require permits for e-bikes but will educate families about statewide regulations and campus safety rules. Other elementary schools will implement their own e-bike safety regulations based on their individual needs.
The districts’ efforts come amid increased crackdown on e-bikes across city agencies, including the police and fire department.
“E-bikes have become an important way for many of our students to get to school and around our community,” said district Superintendent Hilda Maldonado. “By working with students and families, we can help make our entire community safer.”
