Longtime Santa Barbara columnist Ray Ford joins the Santa Barbara News-Press this week with a piece about growing up on the family farm.

Ford actually got his start at the Santa Barbara News-Press decades ago and has built a community following for his outdoor recreation stories and photos. He is also one of the region’s premiere breaking news fire photographers.

His News-Press columns will focus on the stories and adventures he has experienced in the Santa Barbara outdoors and throughout the West. We’re lucky to have him and his ongoing series.

Little-known fact: Mr. Ford was my high school U.S. government teacher at Dos Pueblos High School.

I also want to spotlight the work of Joy Martin, who has been covering all the food, drink and restaurant happenings in Santa Barbara. She is a skilled writer, with a voice and tone that captures the essence of the people she writes about. If you are a restaurant out there and you get a call or email from Joy, you’re in for a treat. She knows how to make your restaurant sizzle.

This week, she spotlights the reopening of the Chase Restaurant and Lounge on State Street.

“The outdoor courts here are lovely, but we kind of missed the consistency and reliability of indoor courts. Our goal is to create a choice for people. We are here to add courts and add a new flavor.”
